Default UPS: Apparently Rifle Scopes Illegal to Ship

Long story short:
Went to a UPS store to ship an Eotech Holoscope back to the manufacturer. Was asked by the UPS store owner what was in the box (insurance purposes). I simply told him a scope. He paused and looked at a stack of papers behind the counter and asked..."For a rifle?" I replied yes, that I was shipping it back to the manufacturer within the USA.

He fumbles through more papers and said it was against federal law to ship a riflescope with UPS - that I had to go elsewhere to ship it. I was in total shock. I tried to educate the owner about federal laws, state laws, etc. He said he didn't want to argue with me, to go elsewhere. I made several key points in a rather assertive tone of voice (ie. UPS ships ammo, UPS ships AR uppers to my doorstep, etc.). He didn't disagree, but he still didn't want to ship my scope.

He told me if I had lied about what was in the box that he would have shipped it and taken my money. I told him I was an honest guy, and I wasn't about to lie about shipping an item to avoid breaking a "make-believe" federal law that he said existed. I ended the conversation by telling him that his policy was simply a store policy, and that he had lost my business from now on, and that he was likely an anti-gun advocate who was too lazy to research the laws himself. Bad business in the long run.

Maybe I missed something and someone can inform me of any errors. All I know is that if it's illegal to ship a scope within the USA then every online sporting goods vendor is going to be in a world of hurt.

By the way, I went to another UPS store across town and had zero problems. Even after the first guy told me that every UPS hub in the area would refuse accepting my package. So much for federal law...

UPS Store ( most likely not owned by UPS, but by a franchisee ), and hiring the "best & brightest" of today's p̶o̶t̶t̶y̶ ̶t̶r̶a̶i̶n̶i̶n̶g̶ graduates to work there.

Not surprised one bit.

The guy was a much older gray-haired gent who was the store owner. The place has been there for many years. My guess is he has an anti-gun mindset, and that he's making the world a better place by refusing service to a deplorable like me. Sad.

Same with ammo. I was shipping back two cases of the hard-primered GT 5.56 to SGAMMO and after the girl lifted the boxes I apologized for weight saying they were ammo. She was unsure, then the manager explained they could not ship ammo but the main UPS hub could. UPS stores cannot ship guns, etc. I drove across town and shipped my booollits.

You cannot ship ammo at a UPS store ( this is UPS policy ).

According to this policy, ammunition must be shipped at a UPS hub or via a UPS drop box.

Since we're here again . . .

Shipping a gun - who, how, where, when and why

Howto Order Guns over the Internet (Auctions, Forums, etc)

I maintain the links above, and they point to current laws, regulations & shipper's policies ( which covers the shipment of ammunition )

That's funny, i shipped a rifle out UPS just a few weeks ago. The guy behind the counter helped me pack it up nice and tight. It helps being the guy behind the counter...

Call UPS corporate and tell them what happened. They do not appreciate losing business because of uninformed employees.

This why I pack and purchase postage and stick it on at home and just drop it off at the UPS or FEDEX store. The less you have to deal with the morons running those stores, the better. Better yet, pick, pack and ship it right from your house. Worth the extra $$ to avoid the idiocy and inconvenience of dropping it off at a store.

Report him. Seriously. If an asshole decides to inconvenience you because of his twisted politics or whatever, complain over his head.

They have some serious morons working at UPS whether it's a hub or one of the stores. I had a guy at a UPS store that wouldn't sell me a box to ship a rifle. I just wanted to buy a box and was going to ship the rifle at the hub. Then another moron at the hub tried to tell me it was against the law to ship an AR bolt carrier group. I had to go find his manager because he wouldn't call him but he did call the police. I stopped using UPS after that.

Go to a different UPS store, and hopefully you won't deal with a complete retard.

The old guy reminded me of Hickok45. I felt like I was disrespecting my grandpa when schooling him about the law, but it had to be done. Will probably write a letter to UPS expressing my concern - not that it will make much difference in my opinion.

I had a UPS idiot tell me I couldn't ship a pistol as an individual to an FFL.

He asked me what was in the box. I told him it's none of his business really, but it's a pistol. I also told him everything was good/legal and the insurance was more than enough.

The MF opened it behind the counter, confirmed, and told me he's lucky he didn't call the police on me.

I am very glad my company switched to FedEx that very month and scheduled regular pickups. I use them exclusively now.

That's funny because I just got home from the nearest UPS shipping center where I shipped out 2180 rnds of ammo to two different states. I'm guessing your UPS store owner is a cuck with an agenda. Fucking dangerous rifle scopes might target something from inside the box.

Or you can set up a one time pick up at your house. I have done this a couple of times but know the rules.

Exactly... I would of told the man to show me the regulation all the while phoning Corporate UPS and asking them.

I'm not sure why they care as long as there is nothing illegal or dangerous to the shipper in the package.

UPS stores are ripoffs. USPS flat rate boxes are the way to go.

Yes, but John Q. Public can't mail ammunition or handguns ( and long guns don't fit in USPS flat rate boxes )

Yeah well that's just like your opinion man.

I mailed an AR in a game size USPS Priority flat rate box. Of course it was disassembled but I did it.

This right here.

You have to ship at a bonified UPS location.

A hub will take your scope.

I'll also add, my pistol experience was through a UPS hub.

It's not just stores.
