Got a wild hair about possibly a .223 AK

I got a wild hair today, and I was thinking about a .223 AK. Are there any places out there to get the parts to build one, that don't cost an arm, a leg, and the rights to your first born child? I have done some looking, but didn't find much for barrels. Any body built one recently?

Other than a Yugo M95 I'm not aware of .223 kits. The Yugo is ^450 and up. A WASR3 built rifle in .223 is affordable as a built rifle or a Draco in .223 (Champion/). Not really much out there. Type 84 Chinese will be $750 and up as a built rifle.

Converting a SAIGA .223 to pistol grip would be as economical as it can get, since most of the work is already done.

With shipping, $200 stamp and FFL fee that is pretty much an "arm & a leg" the OP was talking about not spending. $1800 OTD.

Get a Saiga and spring for some Bulgy .223 waffle mags.

However I love the Galil and Valmet for their longer sight radius and rear peep. Anything Valmet will cost you, but you can find a Golani for <$600 if you are willing to gamble on a Century product. Galil parts kits are running ~$500 without a receiver and barrel, so IMO the Century is worth it just for the complete set of parts.

The Yugo M95A's are a sweet gun if you don't mind paying the price for one. 18" barrel, 1 in 7 twist, chromelined chamber & bore, active tritium night sights & gas regulator to boot!

Let me put this out there before this thread gets retarded. Buy an Arsenal 106FR for about $699. Brand new, Bulgarian made sidefolding stock 5.56NATO AK. You can buy a 106UR krink for under $1000 and the crown/chopping bit only costs about $200.

At the risk of retarding a perfectly normal thread, I'll second rob-cubed's recommendation with a caveat: The Saigas are great rifles, and are even better once you move the FCG forward and add a pistol grip. They do, however, require you to be willing to get down and dirty and do real, however easy, gunsmithing. If you were planning to build one, then you're probably more than ready for this, you can save a bundle, and you can choose what furniture you want on your rifle.

If you're looking to just pick a .223 AK out of a box and have a blast, the Arsenals are supreme without hesitation.

I have a Weiger barrel that is calling for a rifle to be built around it..

I think the Saiga is your best cheap option. Though, the M95s are expensive for a reason..

Yes, the reason being there are only a limited number that were produced and then an even smaller number that came to the United States. There are also reasons why Yugoslavia never adopted the rifle for regular service and why they were sold as parts to places like the United States. Don't get me wrong, they are very nice rifles and I have handled, owned, and fired one, but they are pretty heavy and the 18 inch barrel makes it more of a rifle than a carbine, limiting it's applications.

Arsenals are good but can definitely have problems. I'd suggest either brand new or a used one guaranteed to run well (from a reputable person). Too many used ones out there, and lots of new ones, have problems (again, from personal experience).

I'd say you have several choices all with some chance of getting a lemon. Arsenal 106, SAR-3, or a Saiga (much better if already converted). Not too many options for kit building, although a Yugo Krink in 5.56 would be awesome it wouldn't fit your cost requirement. If you can find one it'll be very expensive.

I have a SAR-3 and it is one sweet shooter. Mags are tricky to find but it's not imposible.

Ditto on the SAR-3 but the mags aren't an issue. I use Arsenal ((10)) and Promags besides the Romy Wieger copies. The Arsenals and Promags were binding at first but I realized the cross brace behind the mag well was misaligned so the flat wasn't oriented correctly. A couple of minutes with a dremel to correct this and they all went in with no problems.

Grind a little out out of the cross rivet and you can use any Arsenal or Polish 5.56 mag.

Build the M95. It's got the nicest fit and finish of any AK I've seen, and I've built almost all of them.

It's by far my favorite, an excellent quality weapon.

The biggest problem with a M95 is the mags. Not compatible with any one else's at all. Really sporadic with the mag availability. Blackthorne had them for a short while and my friend that built a couple bought everyone he could afford, by the time he was paid again they had evaporated. Expensive when you can find them.

I'd go with an Arsenal or SAR/WASR-3.

I have 2 SAR-3's and they shoot as good as my regular AR's. I bought mine back when they were giving away 74's but there was no ammo to be found. at $300 each they were a good buy.
