Default Turk Mauser. What to look for? Edit identified as a Persian.

Got an opportunity to get one. Will be looking at it later in the evening before work.

https://flic.kr/p/GCzBiF

Under the dusty cobwebs it looks nice. Only pic I got though.

If the price is right (opening offer I made is $300 if it passes the smell test) and its in good shape I wouldn't mind taking it home.

Lots of info here:

https://www.turkmauser.com/

$300? Geez I picked one out of a barrel in the LGS for $79. Been a while.

Also some here(good quick guide to models):

http://candrsenal.com/a-quick-and-di...urkish-rifles/

If you are not looking for a particular model(which the above will help with), then all the usual milsurp stuff. Barrel condition, refinishing, headspace, numbers, etc.

I guess barrel condition would be the first thing I'd look at with a Turk. I shoot my rifles so I pass on degraded bores.

Almost all Turkish mausers have been rode hard and put up wet . 300 bucks for a turk mauser is too much .

Looking around some, I guess $300 isn't a terrible price these days, as i saw several between $300 and $400. There were a couple in the $250 range as well. So $300 for one in nice condition, does not sound outlandish.

That's right on par with my thinking. If the condition is over all excellent then I'd have no problem with $300.

On my way to meet the guy now.

Meh. If its a good shooter I won't mind to much. BUT I'm not so sure it really is a Turk. Haggled in the dark and (I know cardinal sin here) didn't get the chance to really look it over. Gut said it was good so I went with it.

What the heck y'all talking about Turkish Mausers for?

Thats a Persian Mauser and if he takes $300 for it you should run as fast as you can the other direction with the rifle. Persian Mausers are some of the nicest and more accurate surplus rifles you'll ever have the pleasure of viewing.

It looks like most of that crap will clean right off.

Except this is a Persian Mauser. Turkish Mausers do not have that stock finish nor Farsi on the stock, another way you can tell is the front sight protectors.

If it cleans up well that could be a $700-1200 rifle depending on just how well it does. How someone let it get that dirty I have no idea.

It was dust. Wiped her down with my hat. Sadly the crown, cleaning rod, buttplate, and bolt knob are rusty. Though it dosent appear to be bad. And suggestions on spiffing her up?

Samco in FL(where it came from) I was told that a hurricane went through once and there were some major leaks which caused rust damage to many of the Persians. This included a spot near the muzzle end of the barrel and the bolt handle. How this happened and why Samco did nothing about it I have no idea. Poor choices like that may be why they are closed now!

Go to an automotive store and get a can of "never dull". Works good on the rust without destroying the bluing. Just my .2 someone may have a better suggestion.

Where in the fuck are finding K98s for $250-$300? You should be buying them up every time you see them for that price. Even Russian captures bring $700+ now.

Just looked at the picture. Seems to be in nice shape under whatever is splattered all over it.

Definitely a great pickup.

Some people have all the luck.

Samco import?

I'm gonna have to agree its a Samco. She matches the rust locations NC was talking about. The kaki colored crap was just dust from being in a garage for god knows how long. Wiped right off with my hat and the pics do not do justice.
Guess I picked up some of Steve's mojo from one of the numerous threads of his

Will be picking up a can on the way home NC.

Looks to be in excellent shape. I ordered my Persian from Samco back in 2000.
If you paid $300.00 for it then you stole it. Congratulations.
