Default Czechpoint Vz.58 Tactical (5.56) Review

Since this is a lesser known gun and one that I think appeals to a lot of us Kalash fanatics I thought I would do a written review here. I purchased this rifle from Atlantic Firearms, if you want the best customer service I recommend you order through them, they have been long time supporters of this forum.

Feel/Operation/Ergo’s: these VZ.58’s are produced in the Czech Republic by Czech Small Arms and they are imported by Czechpoint USA, all Czechpoint USA Vz rifles are oozing with quality, you won’t be disappointed if you fork up the extra dough to get the best! Although externally they look very similiar to a Kalashnikov patterned rifle, they aren’t, internally they are totally different and operate with a striker system and a short stroke gas piston. The 5.56 variant is very soft shooting and has a very similar recoil impulse to a 5.45 AK. In terms of ergo’s they’re a step up from the standard AK, the safety is easier to operate without breaking your grip, the bolt locks open on last round fired, and the large charging handle gives you a very positive grasp.

Reliability: I took this out for one range session, note this isn’t a long-term review, I’ll post long term updates later. I had zero malfunctions it ran flawlessly, so take that as you will

Accuracy: The best groups I was getting were 4 MOA at 100 yards, I realized I didn’t have the RS regulate mount clamped down tight enough, and the mount was shifting rearward during fire. So take this test with a grain of salt because I need to re-tighten the mount and re-test later.

Weight: the VZ.58 is overall slimmer then a AK and weighs roughly a lb. lighter then a stamped AK, the receivers on the Vz.58’s are high quality milled steel. Overall just a nice handy lightweight and compact rifle.

Aftermarket/Accesories: Out of the box included is a high quality 2-point rifle sling, cleaning kit, and two mags (one clear and one black) frosted color magazines can be purchased from Chechpoint’s website along with a whole host of other accesories, the tactical model comes stock with the side optic rail attached and with an M4 style Tactlite buttstock which is one of the lightest AR stock’s on the market, a tactlite cheek riser can easily be added If an optic is desired. RS regulate makes the best VZ.58 optic mounts as seen on my rifle, I have the RS AKOG upper mounted to a Primary Arms 5x prism scope and a piggybacked Vortex Venom RDS, remember you must mount your VZ.58 optics behind the ejection port otherwise you will have reliability issues with spent casings hitting your optics and bouncing back in the open chamber. The proprietary mags are $25 each or you can add the AR magazine adapter ($85 bucks) to use standard AR mags, this part uses no screws and is easily installed, great buy if you already have G.I. style AR mags.

Coolness: Overall if you are kind of stuck between an AR/AK this VZ is kind of best of both worlds, lightweight, flat shooting, standard AR mag compatability, bolt hold open like an AR. And AK like reliability, ease of dissasembly, and sick looks. If you want just a damn cool reliable rifle, that can range out farther then a standard AK it doesn’t get any better then this.

Cool write up, there’s usually a lot of talk about the 7.62x39 variants on here. Not many share much experience with the 5.56, only every now and again. I’ve got 2 7.62x39 variants and I like them a lot and are my favorite 7.62x39 guns, something about that rainbow of steel ejecting up out of the gun is just badass

Iíve got the compact, itís a fireball, fun gun for sure. The rifle I have is a D-technik, who I think CSA actually bought before they imported their own guns

Good write up. The real question is, do I need a 5.56 vz if I already have a vz58 in 7.62 and a 106fr? Hmmmmm...

Excellent write up and pics AKF. I'm eager to hear how you do accuracy wise once you get back out. Screwing w the side rail mount is a true pain in the buttocks, been there.

This gun looks awesome. For me the AR adapter and lighter weight are a huge bonus. I'll be throwing this gun on my wish list alongside the CZ Bren 805.

So can u give us a ballpark of what you paid?

Also interested in actual accuracy report.

OP,
Have you considered the STANAG mag adapter or are you happy with the VZ proprietary mags?

I think I will buy the AR mag adapter simply because I have a bunch of AR mags. I donít really plan on installing it however as I prefer the rock and lock Kalashnikov style magazine system better. The stock magazines are very lightweight and durable!

Thanks for the kind words, I will update the accuracy report and I paid $1,179 for the rifle. Steep price but steep quality too.

You’ll love the little compacts, hell of a lot of fun in a small package. They need a SBR tax stamp or brace to really shine though but I’ve gotten decent at shooting it as is and the left side bolt handle is a nice touch if you opted for it

I like it, hard to tell from the pic is that brace side fold? Also diggin the phantom flash hider, used to run them on all my AKís but now I only have it on the WASR. My compact has the CNC warrior slovak break and itís very heavy I think Iíd prefer the phantom on it

It does not fold, everything is stock from a Czechpoint including the flash hider.

Interestingly they have a magwell adapter for the 5.56 version.
