Default New To Me, A Pre War M1 Garand

Back in late February I decided that it was time for me to order a M1 Garand from the CMP. I have had a M1 for the last 25 years or so, it is a 3/45 SA receiver with a 54 SA barrel, that was pretty much put together for me by a gunsmith. But I wanted to get one from the CMP, that and the lack of other things to buy made the timing seem right. There are 14,000 M1’s that were returned from Turkey that the CMP is selling now and they are getting ready to start selling 86,000 Garands that were returned from the Philippines so thier M1 stock should be good for a while. I know that some here do not care for the CMP, that’s ok, I get it.

I ordered a RM1 Service grade right at the beginning of March, it took about five weeks and I received my M1 last Friday.

Serial number 246942, April 1941

Barrel is a SA 7/43

Bolt is a 12SA which is consistent with the barrel date, 2/42 - 3/44

Op Rod is late 3535382

Trigger housing is earlier then the receiver, SA

Trigger housing and components all look like new old stock replacements, gas cylinder is refinished. Receiver, barrel, op rod, bolt all have same patina and wear.

Stock is new CMP walnut with all new stock metal. Grain is very nice but it is very dry.

With my 3/45 M1 that I have had for 25 years or so

The problem with those M1s from Turkey and the PI is that they are going to have non-GI parts in them.

There is no indication where the one that I got came from, I am going to assume Turkey as the PI M1's have not shown up yet in the process. The only non GI parts on the M1 that I recieved is the stock set. The service grade M1's are getting the CMP walnut stocks and the field and rack grade are getting the hackberry stocks if they need replacing.

I have seen a lot of the Turkish returns and haven't found this to be true.

Trying to score a matching 98k.. If that falls thru, I've been really wanting another Garand...

Looks great Glashaus!
