Only a few folks here fool with Mosins, and I don't think any of us have purchased the sniper versions which SOG is currently selling
Some have built them or bought the "Real" thing..whatever that means
you will probably have better luck posting in the Mosin section on Gunboards
good luck..write us a review if you do buy one...

I got one the other day from SOG for 379.00 and I understand they went down again in price. I was very pleased with the condition and the new scope. The after market scope looks just like an orginal

The repro 91/30 PU rifles can be very nice. Be sure the mount and base are steel as for a while some aluminum mounts and bases were used on some repro rifles and they are lame. They shioot well. As with any suroplus rifle the condition varies but most are very nice. i got one of the SOG PU repros about 5 years ago before I started restoring ex-sniper rifles with repro and original scopes. Nice rifles.

Hmmmm! That's a looker AK! I'd like to have one. I'm pleased with the sniper conversion I did, But it doesn't have that original look!

About 3 or 4 years ago I was on a roll and restored 7 or 8 ex-snipers. Some with original scopes and mounts and some with the excellent Ukranian produced milled reproduction mounts and scopes. Kinda got away from it and more AK building in recent years. Have not even shot them for a good while is the shame of it. Used to shoot them more.

How can you tell if the scope and mount are original or are Ukrainian reproductions? If you could post pictures of the reproduction scope and mount that would be great.

I have not bothered to take individual pictures of repro vs original scopes, mounts and bases in any depth and not handy at present..
As a simple ID the repro scopes will have flat head screws on the turrets. If you look at the first photo above yopu will note this./ The original i the lower photo has the om,ed head turret screws. There are several other ID factors as well.
Original bases and mounts are milled and will show machinmuing marks on the steel and have a nice blued finish depending on wear. The high quality Ukranian repro mounts and bases show this as wel. The lesser quality mounts and bases are cast steel and sho a flatter and less sharp relief in the steel and are often painted vs blued.
There are several other more subtle differences as arsenal and refurb marks on originals.
Here is a pictoral of PE, PEM and PU original Russian scopes for reference.

Also a write up of and pictures of a epro PU from InterOrdnance. You may not see pics if you are not a Gunboards member.
