Default On the fence about a .308 ACE

I'm debating with myself about buying an ACE in .308. For the last 3 months I've been trying to decide between a SCAR and an ACE but just can't bring myself to the cost of the SCAR. No question of the quality of it and all those satisfied owners of them, but I have the X39 and it's really grown on me and I like it more every time I play with it. Then 2 days ago I find a .308 ACE for $1649 which is $60 less than I paid for my X39. So now I'm in trouble because I can throw it on a layaway for 2 months and not break the budget. Found SS mags for it for $20 which makes it even more appealing, I like lots of extra mags for everything and don't like paying 40 or 50 $ for them. I still have yet to see anything satisfying showing an accuracy report, but, I just can't imagine being disappointed with it in that regard considering the dollar investment and there's no denying how well built they are. Just keep thinking I hear a still small voice coming from my safe saying "Please I need a big brother..." I just may need counseling....

If you don't have anything in .308 mix it up, take the plunge and grab the scar !
If I were to get another Galil it would be the 5.56 just cause that bolt release feature.

Is the SCAR 17 really worth double the cost of the 308 Galil? As the owner of a 17S and a x39 Galil, I would have to say no. But FWIW, the SCAR 17's really hold their value well and will only increase in value, especially in volatile times. So if you ever need to sell it, you should be able to recoup your investment.

After owning a 17S, no other 308 has peaked my interest, not even the 308 Galil. Personally, I would go with the SCAR over the Galil. Just personal preference. But listening to you talk, I'd choose the Galil if I were you.

Then post up a range report with your new Galil so we can get an idea on what kind of accuracy it gets? Just don't use cheap plinking ammo.

I've got 3 M1's and an HK-91. Like I said I did a lot of thinking about the SCAR but just can't bring myself to spend that kind of money on one. No question they're nice. I'm not a fan of 5.56 or .223 I don't need any more caliber variety.

I'd sell all of those to fund a SCAR 17.

Problem solved.

I like mine a lot, and its what replaced a .308 AR for me. Depends on how much you like the one you have to be honest. If you like it a lot I'd say it might be worth it if you can afford it. Otherwise I can't say much.

Not when I could have had an original back in '85 but got the HK instead. I had an original Galil side folder I bought back then but the first time to shoot it the TG didn't work so I returned it. It's one of those "if I knew then what I know now" things and I should have kept it. I've liked Galils since back then, it's why I bought the X39 and why I'll probably buy the .308, the one I returned was a .308.

There's something to be said for having the same manual of arms and sharing a lot of parts between ACE x39 and .308.

CDNN has the 308 ACE on sale right now.

Can't really find any real in depth accuracy reviews on it though. Any one know if it has the 7.62x39 "break in period"?

There's a Galil ACE owners group on Facebook that lots of .308 owners share info, one guy had incredible accuracy at 200 yards with Aguila 150gr, the photo is posted around here

Others are getting 1-2 moa

The Galils are nice. I am torn between a 5.56 and a 308. I hate 5.56 as well but damn that's the only rifle I ever liked in 5.56

Wideners has D&H SR-25 20Rd mags for $6. Thinking about a few myself. I think Tim from MAC got about 2MOA w the .308 ACE without seeming to try too hard.

Well I decided to take the plunge today and put one on layaway. Gives me time to get some real mags for it and the other stuff to dress it up. I can get to a range by me that has at least 300 yards, I've got a PA 1-6X24 I can put on it to see what I can do with it. It'll be a while but I'll take good pics especially target pics and do a post.

I have four of D&Hs older SR-25 mags. They had issues, still have yet to contact D&H since they may just need to be used more.

Brownells makes an aluminum magazine, but you need to file a little off the rear leg since they didn't get the memo that anti tilt and straight body magazine isn't fun.

What's the price at CDNN? I have been really thinking about one and best I found was $1649, on gunbroker I think. Thanks

It was $1597. Not bad, it's really making me think about getting one!

That is the best price I've seen on it. I put one on layaway so I'll be paying $50 more, but I'm ok with it still less than I payed for my X39.

Huh, that sucks. I picked up a few from PSA a few weeks back for about $10 each and they have been solid through two load shoot reload cycles. I'll keep an eye on them, not sure of year of manufacture, but that might explain the discounting.

I'm thinking about buying 1 of these to see how they do before I buy a bunch and get stuck with them.

The mags I have are different. I have the steel mags D&H made (or still make?). Could be unlucky or ammo, when the semester is over I'll have some time to take them to the range again. I'm sure their aluminum ones are fine. I wouldn't worry too much about it, I hear more good than bad. My luck was just bound to run into a wall eventually.
